Leafwise privacy policy — 10 September 2026

Leafwise operates on specified iNaturalist observation, taxon, and upload pages. It has no advertising, analytics, telemetry, developer-operated proxy, or separate third-party AI service.

Public statistics: user names/IDs, taxon IDs, place IDs, and the selected date, month, project, and other supported query conditions are sent to https://api.inaturalist.org to retrieve public observation statistics. These extension background requests omit login credentials and cannot retrieve private coordinates. Public first/latest observation dates, IDs, place descriptions, and counts are cached briefly to avoid repeated requests.

Upload assistance: when you request a preview, apply suggestions, or enable automatic processing for new drafts, Leafwise triggers iNaturalist's existing suggestion component. That website component sends its normal image thumbnail and available location/date information to iNaturalist's identification service using the website's existing authentication. Leafwise does not independently obtain passwords, cookies, or authentication tokens, and does not transmit photos to a separate service. Draft state, suggestion scores, image-source markers, and processing reports are used in page memory and are not retained after leaving the page. Automatic processing does not remain enabled across pages.

Storage: saved user and taxon lists use Firefox extension storage.sync and may sync through Mozilla if browser synchronization is enabled. Saved searches and place combinations use storage.local; saved searches include the complete URL, names, and comparison settings and can be deleted in the panel. Public counts and taxonomy responses are cached in extension local/session storage. A local saved-query identifier may be added to a restored iNaturalist URL. Settings are not sent to the GitHub repository.

Clipboard/CSV: copying and exporting only occur when you request them. Results are placed in your clipboard or downloaded locally, not uploaded by Leafwise.
