About this extension
Notte turns bright, glaring websites dark — and gives you the controls to make
any page readable.

Born from necessity: the developer lives with a degenerative eye condition, and
white screens can be genuinely painful for people with low vision, light
sensitivity or eye strain. Notte was built first and foremost as an
accessibility tool, and it will always be completely free: no ads, no
subscriptions, no donations asked.

HOW IT WORKS

Notte doesn't invert colours. It reads the page's stylesheets and remaps every
background to a deep, consistent dark tone and every text to a bright, readable
one, always keeping a high contrast ratio (WCAG-friendly). Colours keep their
identity — buttons, links and highlights stay recognisable — while photos and
videos remain untouched, in their natural colours.

THE TOOLKIT

Dark mode is the entry point, not the whole tool. Every setting below works per
site, on darkened pages and on ordinary bright ones:
  • Guaranteed contrast — a target you set, not a slider you have to tune
  • Text size, letter and word spacing, line spacing
  • Clearer, dyslexia-friendly font
  • Warm tint to cut blue light
  • Brightness, saturation and image dimming
  • Underline every link, strong keyboard focus outlines
  • Reduce motion, for vestibular disorders and migraine

Notte leaves sites that already ship a proper dark mode alone, and every control
in the popup is large and high-contrast — an accessibility tool you need good
eyesight to operate is a contradiction.

PRIVACY

Notte collects nothing. No data, no analytics, no tracking, no account. Your
browsing never leaves your device. Notte asks for site access for one reason
only: some stylesheets are blocked by the browser's cross-origin rules, so a
background script re-fetches them in order to darken them. That script stores
nothing and sends nothing anywhere.

Notte runs on Firefox for desktop and Firefox for Android, and is also available
for Chrome and for Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad, from a single open source
codebase.

Open source under [LICENCE]. If a website doesn't look right, feedback is always
welcome — it helps make the web more readable for everyone.
Developer comments
Notte requests access to all websites for one reason: when a page loads its stylesheet from another domain, the browser blocks the page from reading it, so Notte re-fetches that stylesheet in order to darken it. Without this, any site whose CSS is hosted elsewhere would stay bright. Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere — there is no server, no account and no analytics.
